Zellige tiles have a reputation for being high maintenance and honestly, that reputation is partly deserved and partly misunderstood. So let's break it down.

First, what makes zellige different

Zellige tiles are hand glazed clay tile, fired in a kiln, cut by hand. That process is what gives each tile its unique texture, color variation and that slightly uneven surface that people fall in love with. But that same handmade quality is also why maintenance works a little differently than your standard ceramic tile from a big box store.

The glaze is porous. Seal it.

This is the most important thing to know. Unlike industrial tiles, Zellige has a naturally porous glaze which means it can absorb liquids if you leave them sitting there. Oil splashes, wine, lemon juice — these can stain if you ignore them.

The fix is simple though. Seal your tiles before grouting and reseal once a year. A good penetrating sealer takes about 20 minutes to apply and saves you a lot of headaches down the line. Do this and you'll never really think about maintenance again.
